Smucker Reflects On The Meaning Of 9/11 At Event For America’s 9/11 Foundation

September 11, 2001, was a very sad and tragic day, among the worst in our American experience.  The cost in lives lost, the images of unimaginable destruction, the shock of brutal, deadly attacks on our soil, these things are seared into our national memory.

While the many 9/11 observances are tinged with sadness, there is also much that is uplifting.  Americans have in many ways honored the pledge to never forget the victims of 9/11.  The names of heroes, the rescue efforts, the minor miracles among the devastation, these things have taken root in our memories too.

Dedicated action truly reflects deep respect.  Today, we say thank you to the dedicated individuals who have organized and perpetuated America’s 9/11 Ride.  We say thank you to those who assembled and operate the Foundation.  We say thank you to all those who participate in these events and who contribute to support our uniformed protectors.

This demonstrates an important irony – out of this terrible tragedy came some good.

Americans rediscovered common purpose that brought communities together in new ways.

Americans had their volunteer spirit sparked and rejuvenated.

Americans have a greater understanding of the risks our uniformed protectors take, and a greater appreciation of the courage they commonly display.

Americans have come to grips with the reality that security requires constant vigilance and preparation.

Americans were reminded that festering hate and fanaticism were not just distant concerns far from our shores, and that we would have to play a role in promoting peace and tolerance.

The spirit behind America’s 9/11 Ride is remarkable.  The generosity that supports the Foundation is remarkable.  Ceremony is important, but this is much more.  It is constructive action.

It is a fitting tribute to visit each of the 9/11 sites.  It is there that we best honor the lives lost, the hopes extinguished, on that terrible day.

There finally seems agreement on a permanent memorial for the Somerset County field where Flight #93 crashed.  The courageous actions of the only Americans who had a fighting chance will serve as an inspiration forever.  The messages they left – of love, of prayer, of faith, of determination – touch us in profound ways.  Many of the families of the victims have imparted important lessons as they lead lives of dignity and grace.

This ride accomplishes a lot of good.  But it makes a strong statement too.  The terrorists did not win.  Neither did fear, nor intimidation.  Freedom won.  Democracy won.  By pursuing the war against terror, we are making sure that freedom prevails, today, tomorrow, and forever.  By actively exercising our rights and participating in all the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, we make sure that democracy endures.
