Senator Smucker Joins Senate Majority Policy Committee on Marcellus Shale Gas
Well Tour
On April 8 the Senate Majority Policy Committee traveled to the Williamsport
area to tour Marcellus Shale gas well sites prior to a hearing on the subject
the following day. Senator Smucker joined the Committee on the tour to see
first-hand drilling and extraction operations. With the Senator on the
Appropriations Committee, he has had an interest in this subject given a recent
proposals from the Governor and others regarding enhanced revenue from the
leasing of state land for gas extraction and the potential of a severance tax.
“Natural gas from Marcellus Shale is an economic and energy production
opportunity unlike any in Pennsylvania. The potential for increased economic
development, good paying jobs and greater energy security is tremendous,”
comments Senator Smucker. Gas extraction from Marcellus Shale is a fledgling
industry in Pennsylvania, with well drillers and gas producers still learning
the most efficient and effective methods of extracting gas since Marcellus
Shale, its geologic and geographic location, present unique challenges compared
to other gas plays.
Such opportunity also presents challenges with regard to ensuring that during
and after gas extraction our environment and landscape are protected. “Finding
a balance between opportunity and challenge is key to success for both the
industry, the region affected and all Pennsylvanians,” stated Smucker.
