October 31, 2009 - Senator Smucker with Fire Fighter and Fire

October 29, 2009 - Senators Smucker and Folmer toured the
Covanta Lancaster, Inc. energy-from-waste facility located on the banks of the
Susquehanna River. The facility processes 1,200 tons-per-day of solid waste and
generates 35.7 megawatts of renewable energy. The facility is also "zero
discharge", which means that all the wastewater generated on-site is treated and
reused in the waste management process. The facility also uses secondary sewage
treatment effluent from a nearby treatment plant for all of its process water.
As part of its operations, there is also a public drop-off center where
residents can bring non-hazardous household items for disposal. (Click on photo to view additional photos.) |

October 26, 2009 - Senator Smucker presented a Citation to the
family of E. William Gates of Conewago Township, to honor his deep devotion to
family, community, and country.

October 24, 2009 – Senator Smucker participated in the
Millersville Community Parade. The 2010 yellow Chevy Camaro was donated
for use in the parade by Keim Chevrolet. (Click on photo to view additional

October 23, 2009 - Senator Smucker held a Town Hall Meeting with
the residents of Calvary Fellowship Homes. The retirement community is located
North of Lancaster in Manheim Township. Calvary Fellowship Homes was
established in 1963 and contains 31 acres of cottages and apartments for
citizens 62 years of age or older. (Click on photo to view additional

October 21, 2009 - Senator Smucker presented a citation to
Strasburg Mayor Bruce Ryder at the mayor's retirement dinner. Mayor Ryder’s
wife, Bobbe, was also in attendance. Mayor Ryder has held this position for 15
years and will step down on December 31, 2009. The mayor also served as the
coordinator for the Route 896 Relocation Project. His dedication to serving
Strasburg is unmatched and will be seen for years to come. (Click on photo to view additional photos.)

October 15, 2009 - Senator Smucker attended a demonstration of
Classrooms For the Future at McCaskey East High School in Lancaster. The
senator went to different classrooms to see how Classrooms For the Future
impacted the learning environment. Classrooms For the Future is part of an
education reform movement that allows teachers to use technology as an effective
tool to educate students. This grant funded program provides student and
teacher laptops, projectors, smart boards and other technology in each
