May 29, 2009 - Senator Smucker met with residents and employees of Landis
Homes to briefly discuss pieces of legislation that affect their community.
After the discussion, the Senator was given a tour of Landis Homes. He was
impressed with the amount and quality of care that was provided.

May 27, 2009 - Senator Smucker and Senator Waugh hosted a breakfast with
Senator Jake Corman, Chairman of the Senate Appropriations committee, to discuss
Senate Bill 850 (the Senate's version of the state budget). The breakfast was
held at Heritage Hills in York. The event was attended by various state, county,
local and school officials and business professionals throughout York County.
Senator Corman gave a presentation supporting the Senate's approach to the
budget during this unprecedented time in our state's history. The Senators each
noted that the prudent course of action at this time is to match spending to
anticipated revenues lest the state and its citizens face greater financial

May 24, 2009 - Senator Smucker participated in the East Prospect Memorial Day
parade, York County. After the parade, the Senator spoke at the Memorial Day
ceremony in the local cemetery. The ceremony was a solemn reminder of the

May 22, 2009 - Senator Smucker participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony at
the new Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA. This ceremony was the culmination of a
community-wide effort that included raising $2.5 million with the L-S region.
The Senator had served as Campaign Chair prior to being elected to the state
Senate. The new YMCA opened on May 23rd and is located off of Rt. 741 in

May 20, 2009 - Senator Smucker presented a check along with the
Bridge Educational Foundation, AWI (Associated Wholesalers, Inc.) / Shurfine
Markets to Resurrection School. AWI / Shurfine Markets contributed $34,000
through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) to Resurrection
School, Mount Calvary Christian School, and Lancaster Christian School. EITC
gives tax credits to eligible businesses who contribute to a Scholarship
Organization, an Educational Improvement Organization, and/or a Pre-Kindergarten

May 21, 2009—Senator Smucker hosted the Acting Secretary of the Pennsylvania
Department of Community and Economic Development, George Cornelius, for a tour
of Lancaster City. The tour focused on various completed and currently active
economic development projects in and around the city. It included a walkthrough

May 20, 2009 - Senator Smucker visited Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station in
York County. The visit included an informational session about the benefits of
nuclear power as well as a tour of the facility, including the control room,
reactor and fuel storage areas. The Senator was impressed with the high level of
attention to detail in the operations and the security of the plant. Providing

May 15, 2009 - Senator Smucker took time to read a book to
children at the Lancaster Day Care Center (LDCC) and to take a tour of the
facilities. Executive Director Nancy Jordan guided the tour. Established in
1915, LDCC provides high quality, affordable childcare and educational
experiences for 102 children 8 weeks old to kindergarten age. Their target
population includes low and low to moderate-income working parents and parents
enrolled in educational programs. They also serve the homeless population and
children in need of protective care through the Children & Youth services
program. LDCC is a Star 4 center, the highest level achievable. The Stars
program utilizes research-based best practices to promote quality early learning
environments and positive child outcomes. The standards address staff
qualifications and professional development, the early learning program,
partnerships with family and community, and leadership and management. Senator
Smucker was truly impressed by the facility, staff and most importantly, the

May 14, 2009 - Senator Smucker hosted an Open House with a
special ribbon-cutting ceremony at his new district office in the Lower Windsor
Township Municipal Building. More than 100 residents from the 13th District
attended the event and were able to meet with Senator Smucker, his staff and

May 12, 2009 - Senator Smucker was a guest speaker at Manheim Township Middle
School for their annual career day. He spoke and answered questions from
students in grades 7 and 8 who have an interest in politics as a career.

May 8, 2009 - After recently opening a district office in the York County
portion of the 13th district, Senator Smucker hosted a constituent breakfast at
the Susquehanna Area Senior Center in lower Windsor Township. The Senator
provided personal insights on his first days in office, an update on legislative

May 3, 2009 – Senator Smucker presented a Senate Citation to
Michael Bassett of Troop 58 in Willow Street during a Court of Honor recognizing
this achievement. For his Eagle project, Michael planned and coordinated the
construction of a bridge in West Lampeter Township's Village Park as a part of
an extended pedestrian path. Michael was joined by his fellow troop members and
his proud parents, John and Maureen Bassett.

May 1, 2009 - Congressman Pitts joined Senator Smucker for First Friday in
Lancaster. Senator Smucker hosted an Open House at his Lancaster District Office
which featured the Congressman's artwork. Constituents and local officials such
as County Commissioner Scott Martin and County Treasurer Craig Ebersole had the
unique opportunity to discuss state and national issues and ask questions of
both their Congressman and State Senator. Congressman Pitts also provided
insights into the pieces of his work he brought for display. Senator Smucker was
tremendously pleased and appreciative of the Congressman's gracious visit and
with the turnout for the event.

May 1, 2009 - Senator Smucker Hosts School Superintendents
Roundtable. School Superintendents from around the 13th Senatorial
District gathered at Maple Grove Community Center in Lancaster Township to
discuss a variety of issues with the Senator and members of his staff. Senator
Smucker hosted the event so that he could hear from the Superintendents on
issues that are important to them and the districts they serve. The Senator also
desired to give them an update on some important things happening in Harrisburg.
The state budget and education funding topped the topics discussed. School
districts are now in the midst of preparing their budgets for the next fiscal
year, which coincides with the state's budget start date of July 1. Other topics
discussed were proposed graduation exams and mandate relief. Those in attendance
believed it was a valuable opportunity and desired to continue to have such
discussions on a regular basis.
